How to make over a junk table:

1. Remove any handles or knobs. Sand down to remove old paint or varnish to expose the bare wood.

2. Do a trial application in a hidden spot.

3. Apply stain using a minimum of brush strokes, brushing evenly in the direction of the grain.

4. Sand lightly between coats to remove any raised grain.

5. Once the table is dry, refit any handles or knobs.
