Sadolin woodstain products have been used extensively on an award winning school designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership. Mossbourne Community Academy is located on a brownfield site previously occupied by Hackney Downs School.
When the old school was demolished, the local education authority and Hackney Borough Council sought a new structure that would provide a single aspect solution to the educational requirements of the community whilst at the same time, visually complementing the site's hostile boundary conditions.
The Design
The architect's design is a timber framed three storey high building, functionally divided into houses. The building comprises two structures, a blockwork diaphragm wall and a glulam softwood timber frame tied together and supported through the cores and the top lit atria. The structural timber is glulam, using European softwood. Exposed timbers have a hardwood capping integrated into the timber assembly to prevent corrosion by standing water.
The Sadolin Solution
All externally exposed softwood was coated using a three coat Sadolin system. Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver was applied, followed by a base coat of Sadolin Classic and a top coat of Sadolin Supercoat in Light Oak. “We researched the timber coating extensively to find the most natural looking product that would at the same time, fulfil the protective requirements for the timber and keep the maintenance requirements to a minimum,” comments Tracy Meller, architect at the Richard Rogers Partnership. “Sadolin provided the solution and it was applied to the external timber of the frame on the new school.”
A key driver for the design team was to deliver a building which adopted sustainable principles during construction and in its final use. The environmental credentials of the Sadolin product portfolio met all sustainable criteria, helping to create a structure that is contemporary, functional and complementary with the surrounding urban environment.
