The success of the original Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire has led to the creation of a further theme park venture for owners, the Tussauds Group. The concept of Europe's first themed Water Park and hotel has culminated in the construction of the Splash Landings Hotel and Cariba Creek Water Park located right next door to the Alton Towers Hotel, with Sadolin chosen to protect and decorate the exterior timber detailing.
Timber was used extensively in the design of the building which follows a tropical Caribbean theme, with wooden weatherboarding, soffits and fascias. Sadolin Superdec opaque wood protection was selected to coat and protect the timber and to help create a complementary variety of finished surfaces. The theme is very rustic with some of the timber deliberately "distressed" for maximum visual appeal. Superdec was specified in seven different colours to enhance and highlight the aesthetic appearance of the substrates.
As well as looking good, Superdec's flexible alkyd/acrylic formulation offers excellent protective performance, resisting cracking, peeling and flaking. Because of the amount of timber used, design and build contractors, Shepherd Construction required a low maintenance, high performance stain that would offer durability over time.
As project architect Andrew Sharpe explains, quality of materials was paramount. "The entire build programme specified high quality products that would withstand the very high volume of visitors expected," he says. "Timber features heavily in the overall design and Sadolin Superdec affords it the necessary protection."
